Oh Ladies Running Club Training Night

Members of the Old Hatfield Ladies Running club (www.ohladies.co.uk) were put through their paces by Olympic middle distance runner Jemma Simpson on the track at Gosling Sports Park this week (Monday).

Former British 800 metres champion Simpson, who competed at the 2008 Beijing Olympics, shared her expertise with a group of about 25 local runners, showing them how to warm up and improve their muscle strength before taking them through part of one of her training sessions.

“I’m trying to give everyone and example of how an Olympic athlete would warm up for a session and then show the type of session they would do to improve and gain fitness,” said the 31-year-old, who is aiming for selection for next year’s Rio Olympics.

Oh Lady member Melissa Mileham of Hatfield only took up running four months ago but enjoyed the special track session.

“It was good fun. I enjoyed learning something new and it was inspiring to see what Jemma and athletes at her level can do.”

Victoria Tidd of Hatfield, who completed the 2015 London Marathon, said, despite running for the past 10 years, it had been a new experience for her.

“I’ve never run on the track before and it was good to run some miles on it, learning to save some energy and see the discipline you need to run at pace.”

A member of the Oh Ladies since 2013, Tidd added: “The Oh Ladies club is amazing. It keeps going from strength to strength. It started off as a small group of women running together and now there’s lots of members all supporting and encouraging each other.”

The training session was organised by Oh Ladies through athletic clothing company Lornah Sports (www.lornahsports.co.uk), for whom Simpson is an ambassador, and was open to other women’s running clubs in the Welwyn Hatfield area.

“It was brilliant, the group was really friendly and inspiring,” said Jo Jamieson from Welwyn and a member of the Welwyn Garden City Running Mummies.

“I’ve been running for almost 20 years and that was the first Fartlek (speed) session I’ve done because I’ve always been scared.”

Oh Ladies caters for all levels of runners from absolute beginners to seasoned marathon runners and holds sessions at various locations around Hatfield and WGC.

The club’s qualified leaders offer a wide range of different activities such as ‘New to Running’ courses, ‘Boot Camp’ and ‘Kids’ Club,  all of which combine fitness with fun.

ABOUT THE LOGO

Lornah Kiplagat, the African born Multiple World Champion in athletics, is renowned for her powerful, offensive running style that evokes associations with a lion. Her nickname is Simba, Swahili for lion. The lion is therefore inseparable from the sports brand Lornah.

ABOUT LORNAH

Lornah Kiplagat was born in 1974, in a very small village on the outskirts of the Rift Valley in Kenya. Against all odds, at a time when opportunity was very limited and women were expected to remain home and raise the children, Lornah started her journey. She became one of the worlds best ever runners on the track and the road. In line with her own story, Lornah created the
Lornah Kiplagat foundation that is dedicated to give Kenyan girls a fair chance at a good education. She also created Africa’s
best High Altitude Training Centre, accommodating the world’s best runners and built the first ever privately funded synthetic running track in Iten, Kenya.

This inspirational story encompasses bravery, willpower, dedication, hard work, courage and a will to survive has lead Lornah to where she is today. ‘Lornah Sports’ is an expression of Lornah’s personal refusal to conform to the norm, lead from the front and embrace female empowerment.
